BooksMaps

I am a book designer, cartographer and publisher based in Breda (NL). Together with fellow designer Rob van Hoesel we run The Eriskay Connection, an independent publishing house focusing on contemporary storytelling at the intersection of photography, research and writing.

As book designer I mostly work directly together with an author, photographer or artist. I am often already involved in a project from an early stage, giving me the ability to also act as editor. This is how I like to work, and how I can make sure that the final publication represents the project as good as possible.

As a cartographer, I always try to make sure to visualise the necessary information as clear as possible with simple design decisions. By extensively researching the subject of the map I am able to distill the essence of what the author is trying to convey, and create a map that communicates exactly this.

I am also an avid collector of early 20th century atlases. These atlases were made in an era when hand-drawn maps, numerous printing inks, and all kinds of shading came beautifully together with the ability to mass produce books in offset printing.
