	For five years David Van Reybrouck worked on his monumental Revolusi, a thorough research on the battle for independence of Indonesia. For this publication I was asked to create thirty monotone maps on various subjects concerning the history of Indonesia.The design of the maps is referring to the styles and printing technologies of the mid 20th century. Therefore all maps contain only black, so variations in tone are only accomplished by using various different shadings.

In 2004, Norbert Schöbel and his partner Thorsten Baensch started walking from their adopted home in Brussels to Munich, the city of Norbert’s birth. This was the first big step on a Grand Tour of more than 3000 km tracing a circle across Europe in 155 days over 12 years and 7 months. Hamburg, where Thorsten grew up, was also part of the trip as well as Berlin, Prague and many other cities, towns and villages. They walked through seven countries: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
For this massive publication I am creating 155 detailed maps showing every step of this Grand Tour. The maps are printed in four colours: black, light blue, warm red and yellow. The book is expected to be released in the Spring of 2021.

Driving along the former front line around the city of Ypres in Belgium it is nearly impossible to imagine that one of the most horrific wars of all time was waged here one hundred years ago.
The traces of the Great War have been almost completely erased from the landscape over the course of decades. Even today, human remains and projectiles are still found every time someone sticks a spade into the soil. Somewhere beneath the sod, tens of thousands of missing soldiers are presumed to lie undiscovered, along with hundreds of thousands of unexploded shells.
This map is 

created for the publication Shaky Ground by Peter Dekens (BE). It

shows the most important front lines around Ypres during the First World War.

I was asked by David Van Reybrouck to create three political maps for his essay on Neutral-Moresnet, a former micronation which existed from 1815, after the defeat of Napoleon, until the aftermath of the First World War. The maps were published in Zink, the boekenweekessay of 2016. The boekenweek (book week) is a yearly festival in the Netherlands that celebrates Dutch literature.


The first map shows the location of Neutral-Moresnet next to its neighbouring countries the Netherlands, Belgium and the Kingdom of Prussia (present-day Germany). The second map shows the direct surroundings of the condominium, such as villages and historical municipal borders. The last map focuses on the evolution of the border between Belgium and Germany since the Congress of Vienna, where the division of the municipality of Moresnet started.

Leopold’s Legacy is a reflection on both the visible representations of colonialism in present-day Belgium, and the hidden traces of its gruesome past. Oliver Leu (DE) presents an eclectic collection of visual research, focusing on various topics from colonial monuments and prestigious architecture to antique postcards and collaged sculptures for alternative monuments. All these remnants of a once glorious past paint a wry story of decades of structural exploitation and genocide, and demonstrate how in Europe our collective perception of these events is gradually changing. 
With Leopold’s Legacy, Leu paints the portrait of an ambitious ruler with delusions of grandeur, and the influence the exploitation of his private colony still has on his home country today.
Because of the eclectic nature of Oliver’s project, we decided to make an edit that accentuates this eclecticism, by splitting the book in several chapters, each printed on different types of paper. Each chapter also has a different design direction. For example, some parts only contain full-bleed images, other parts only have found footage with captions. The book itself is selfcovered with four-page cardboard signatures at the front and back.

	Since the 1920s the Belgian factory Gevaert accidentally disposed tons of silver as a by-product of the production of photographic film. This outflow ended up in a nearby border creek. For its sludge coloured black by the ­silver, this creek was popularly called ­Zilverbeek (Silver Creek). 
In 1927 a tool maker working at the factory ­realised the kind of fortune the factory was washing away on a daily basis. The man invented a system to recover the silver from the sludge. He secretly drained the stream, and transported the dried sludge to a local metallurgical plant where the silver was extracted. The man recovered up to half a ton of silver a year, more than enough for a generous salary. 
This story fascinated Lucas Leffler (BE), who extensively researched the events, and tried to reenact them by taking mud from the bottom of the Zilverbeek, trying to find traces of silver. While he didn’t find any silver, he finally used the mud to make ‘mud prints’, of which a reproduction has been added as a poster in this publication.

As Zilverbeek is about a very small story, we wanted the publication to be modest as well. Therefore we came up with a kind of inside-out binding. The centrefold spread contains the whole story and is made of cardboard. It gives physical structure to the book, but also separates the historic found footage in the first part and Lucas’ own photographs of his reenactment in the second part. As very little is known about the protagonist of the story, his portrait is on the cover, but hidden away behind a translucent dust cover made of very thin paper.

BredaPhoto Festival the leading photo festival in the Netherlands. It shows the state of affairs in contemporary photography based on an internationally relevant, social theme. The title of the 2018 edition is To Infinity and Beyond, focusing on the fundamental change technology and science bring to the world around us.
For this edition, we decided to design the publication more like a luxury magazine than a classical catalogue, by choosing a slightly coated paper stock and softcover binding. Every photographer was assigned a title page and either one to three spreads. All photographers were then categorised in different subjects that were divided by signatures of recycled paper with essays by the guest curators. The whole publication is bilangual, with English as leading language with bigger typography.

Layers of Reality is both a personal and a semi-scientific research study of synaesthesia. Anna Püschel (BE), a synaesthete herself, experiences colours when looking at certain images, and here, she questions her conception of reality. Using a large database of images, she investigates her synaesthetic reactions in an attempt to understand how we construct reality.
When Anna asked us to design and publish her prize-winning graduation project, we wanted to make sure to visualise her fascinating research as good as possible. The whole research is divided over five chapters, each showing one specific way to look at her specific type of synaesthesia. As the colours she feels when looking at images can vary a lot, and even include white, we decided to print the whole book with a very light grey tone, to make white-coloured blocks stand out from the background without using borders.
